Safeway Programs Include:
For 10 to 12 weeks each summer we open our corporate doors to college juniors and seniors. It's an opportunity for you to get a taste of the exciting, fast-paced retail industry at our corporate headquarters in Pleasanton, California. As a side benefit you will enjoy access to the rich variety of outdoor and cultural activities in the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California.
- Partnering with Safeway management teams, interns will be assigned to real-world projects while building up knowledge of (corporate operations in )the retail industry.
- Interns receive an interactive overview of the corporation via assignments, presentations by senior executives and tours to our manufacturing and distribution centers.
- Each intern will present his or her summer project to management at the end of the program.
- The 10-12 week Summer Internship Program runs from June through August. Specialized areas of opportunities may include Supply Chain, Category Management, Procurement, Advertising, Marketing, Supply Operations, IT, Distribution, Accounting and Financial Analysis and Planning.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in progress
- 3.0 GPA or above
- Strong analytical, research and problem-solving abilities *
- Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Self-starter, able to support multiple demands
- Previous retail experience preferred but not required

Management Trainee Program:
A 6-9 month training opportunity during which you will be mentored and trained by a Director to maximize your mastery of the retail grocery business. Areas of opportunity may include Category Management, Procurement, Pricing, Marketing, Finance and Supply Chain. After successfully completing the training program, you will be placed as an Analyst in one of these exciting business units.
Qualifications:
- BA/BS degree in business administration, marketing, economics, or business related field
- Strong analytical and quantitative abilities
- Excellent verbal and written presentation skills with the ability to communicate to senior management.
- Solid leadership skills and a high degree of initiative.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the desire to be a team player.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments and manage competing priorities with tight deadlines.

Associate Supervisor Management Trainee Program (Supply Operations):
- You will hold a leadership position on a Plant Manufacturing Team responsible for production and quality control of Safeway merchandise.
- The plant manager will mentor you on all facets of the business.
- Your responsibilities will include the hiring and managing of employees.
- After a successful training period of 12-18 months, you will be promoted to Production Supervisor. In this role you will oversee production lines, driving increased efficiency and quality as part of our corporate mission of World-Class initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Four year degree in Food Science, Food Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Manufacturing or related field
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong MS office skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access

Retail Leadership Development (RLD) Program:
This premier training program prepares individuals for store manager leadership.
- You will spend the 21 weeks of Phase I at a specially selected training store. During that time you will attend classes, work in each major department in the store, learn about the financial reports used to measure sales results, acquire knowledge of the duties of managing a shift, and complete a detailed written analysis of one department as well as the entire store.
- During Phase II, you will work as an Assistant Manager, and continue to receive additional management training. You will then develop and present three detailed store projects. At the end of Phase II, you should possess the skills necessary to perform successfully in the Store Manager selection process.

Information Technology Trainee Program:
The Application Development Group acts as the liaison between Safeway's core business units and the Information Technology organization, supporting a variety of business initiatives and re-engineering projects. The team applies applicable technical and system functionality to deliver solutions to business-related projects.
- Trainees in the Application Development Group will work on multiple projects to which you will apply your applicable technical and system skills.
- You will fulfill various roles, including but not limited to: Business Process Analyst, Business Designer and Business Model Reviewer, all based on relative experience, skill and domain-specific knowledge.
- After successful completion of an intensive 8-12 week training program during which you will perform key roles on each project, you will be placed into Business Analyst positions in the IT organization.
Qualifications:
- Actively enrolled in 4-year accredited college with at least a 2.5 overall GPA
- Junior or senior standing at the time of application
- Seeking a degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems Management, or related field.

Financial Management Associate Program
Safeway's Financial Management Associate Program is a development program designed to place high potential MBA graduates into leadership positions in the Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) organization. Through participation in cross-functional, strategic projects and top-level exposure, Finance Managers contribute immediately to the Safeway team in significant ways. Recent MBA graduates who are interested in hitting the ground running are an ideal fit for Management roles on the Safeway team.
The program offers participants an opportunity to gain broad exposure to key functional departments though work on highly visible, strategic projects. Projects may include exposure in the following areas: Marketing and Merchandising, Analytical/Loyalty Card Marketing, Merchandising/Marketing Financial Planning & Analysis, Retail Operations, Category Management, and Corporate Reengineering and Analysis. The foundation of the program is a series of experiences and key exposure opportunities that will prepare Associates to add measurable value to the Finance function.
The Associate's manager will be responsible for providing training and guidance required for the associate to be effective and add value in his/her position. This includes process, systems and industry training, and any specific training needs necessary for proper acclimation into the Finance Manager role.
The experience of working on diverse cross-functional assignments will provide associates with broad experiences that will secure their success in the Finance Manager position. The Safeway management team determines assignments after consideration of the associate's developmental needs and preferences as well as the needs of the business.
Each assignment will be focused on different aspects of Finance. Some of the assignments may include:
- Drive financial planning, forecasting, reporting, and analysis activities for a business unit or functional operation group.
- Develop sales and profitability plans/forecasts based on business strategies.
- Provide periodic performance reporting and analysis to support business decisions
As a compliment to on-the-job training, Finance Managers are offered the opportunity to meet and learn from senior executives. Associates will participate in "Executive Lunch and Learn Meetings" (1 per quarter with top level executives) These sessions allow new Managers valuable insights from our leaders, while allowing for the opportunity to connect and make key connections with executive decision-makers.

The Marketing Strategies group is leading Safeway's transition from category-centric retail to customer-centric retail, and works on cross-functional strategies and business processes, specifically as they relate to Safeway's customer strategy. MBA graduates will join the Marketing Strategies group in the position of Manager - Initiatives and Innovation.
Job Description:
- MBA graduates in Marketing Strategies will work on project-based initiatives designed to enhance and extend Safeway's customer strategy
- Initiatives will include everything from developing strategies to tailor Safeway stores to better meet the needs of customers (assortment, space allocation, pricing and promotion), to supporting the development of innovative private label products to take advantage of unique opportunities in the marketplace, to designing and executing targeted marketing campaigns to improve Safeway's engagement with our most important customers.
